iPhone Matting Calculator
iPhone Matting Calculator
Introduction:
The Matting Calculator is a valuable tool for artists, framers, & anyone doing their own framing. It is easy to use and fits in the palm of your hand. These instructions will help you effectively use the Matting Calculator.
Functions of the Matting Calculator:
1) Calculate Matt Borders
2) Calculate Frame Size
3) Calculate Image Size
4) Fraction Mode
Note: In this app the outside dimensions of the matt are referred to as the frame size and the opening of the matt is referred to as the image size.
Standard Framing Practice:
In the field of framing all image sizes are measured 1/4 inch (or 1/2 centimeter) smaller in both the vertical and horizontal directions. This is done because there are always variations between measuring the artwork and cutting the matt.
Units:
If you are using inches enter all your dimensions in inches, then all the return values will be in inches. The same applies if you use feet, meters, centimeters, etc.
Fraction Mode:
Fraction mode enables users of inches to enter and receive dimensions in terms of half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth of an inch increments. To turn the fraction mode on move the switch into the on position. When entering dimensions in fraction mode you can enter them in one of three ways:
* Decimal value (example: 12.5)
* Whole number plus a fraction
(example: 12 + 1/2, or 12 : 1/2 )
* Single fraction only (example: 25/2)
All calculated values will show in the form of a whole number plus a fraction (example 12 + 1/2). Note: only numbers, one plus or colin sign, and one division sign are allowed as inputs. Any other symbols or letters will cause incorrect results.
Additional Bottom Thickness:
In some cases an image looks better in a matt if the bottom is thicker than the top. To do this add a value in the ADDITIONAL BOTTOM THICKNESS text field. If left empty the default value will be zero.
Calculate Matt Borders:
Enter the frame size, image size, and if desired the amount of ADDITIONAL BOTTOM THICKNESS. (Remember: make the image size slightly smaller to prevent the image from falling through the matt opening). Touch the CALCULATE button and the matt border measurements will show on the screen. Click NEW CALCULATION to start over.
Calculate Image Size:
Enter the frame size and optional bottom thickness. Clear the values for the image size. Touch the CALCULATE button and the matt will show without border measurements. Enter the matt borders that are desired then touch the GET IMAGE SIZE button. Now the dimensions for the image size have been filled in.
Calculate Frame Size:
Enter the image size and optional bottom thickness. Clear the values for the frame size. Touch the CALCULATE button and the matt will show without borders. Enter the matt borders that are desired then touch the GET FRAME SIZE button. Now the dimensions for the frame size have been filled in.

Calculating the matt dimensions has never been so easy
Matting Calculator for the iPhone:
This app is designed for Artists, Picture Framers, and anyone else who is going to matt and frame their own pictures.
This app will calculate the matt boarders needed for your image to fit perfectly into any frame. Saving you head ache and cost of having to re-cut the matt multiple times as a result of having calculated the matt boarders incorrectly.
The Matting Calculator has the option to use Fraction Mode. This means that users of inches can enter and receive the dimensions in a convenient fraction form.
The matt cutting assistant also allows you to calculate two special cases. First, the image size is unknown, but you require it to fit into a specific frame with specific matt boarders. Second, you need to know what size frame is needed to fit your picture with specific matt boarders.
This is a must have app for anyone who doesn't like math, and thus don't like figuring out the matt dimensions, or if you work in the matting and framing business.
